The Year 8s unsatisfied with regional success competed in and won the Essex Shield Rugby championships on Wednesday. After winning the regional tournament a fortnight ago, they headed back to Thurrock to test their skills and ambition, against the 4 winners of the other regional tournaments.

The boys showed that they were a force to be reckoned with on a county wide level and beat Brentwood School 35-0 in the first round.

In the second game the faced an organised side in Eastleigh School. STM put in a strong defensive display and the boys showed that they had great attacking options from a number of players. STM came away 20-5 winners.

Third game was against Emerson Park who possessed a strong forward pack, and penetration in the backs. Our tackling stepped up a gear, forcing them continually backwards, we were able to score some excellent tries. We dominated the game and came away winning by 25 points to 0.

The final game was Orminston Rivers. With our eyes on the trophy, our concentration slipped and they took an early lead. We had to pull our socks up and work hard to equalise. After some great tackling from both teams it was 10-10. Then, with the final play of the game our scrum half Will sneaked round the fringes of their defence, with a defender coming across to tackle him, he drew the tackle and passed the ball to Daniel Adebayo who ran in to score the winning try. The boys won the game 15-10!

The boys were then crowned undefeated champions by Essex RFU, they were presented with the rugby shield by Saracens prop Nick Auterac. A great achievement and season boys!
