St Thomas More High School

National Athletics Regional Finals

Last Friday our pupils travelled over to Lee Valley Athletics Stadium, London, for the Regional Finals of the National Schools Athletics competition.

The morning’s events quickly got underway and it was clear from the start that our boys were doing way more than holding their own; we in fact dominated many of the track and field events. There were numerous strong performances from the team but special mentions must go to our biggest point winners on the day:

  •  Michael Okafor in Year 7 who ran 12.7 seconds in the 100m
  • Seagun Shodunke who jumped 11.21m in the triple jump
  • Herbert Zumbika who ran 40.2 seconds in 300m
  • Joe Trim who ran the 1500m in 4 minutes 58 seconds

There were many notable performances in all areas and it was a strong team performance all round.

The final results:

1st    King Edward VI Grammar School, Essex – 446 points

2nd  William Edwards School, Essex – 444 points

3rd  St Thomas More School, Essex – 442 points

4th Woodland School, Essex – 425 points

5th The Eastwood School, Essex – 425 points

6th  Verulam School, Hertforshire - 418

7th Emerson Park Academy, Essex – 409 points

8th Farlinghaye High School, Suffolk – 393 points

9th The Boswells School, Essex – 389 points

10th  Wymondham College, Norfolk – 386 points

The boys delivered event after event throughout the day and the black and white vests were constantly acquiring the top 3 track places.  Unfortunately a disqualification In the relay event cost us a minimum of 10 points and we finished in third. However a fantastic achievement from all the boys involved!
