St Thomas More High School

Battlefields Trip - December 2014

23 students and 3 members of staff have just returned from a very informative and reflecting trip to the graves and trenches of WWI. On this trip we visited many of the commonwealth war graves, and a German Cemetery. Here we really gained a sense of the scale of the number of soldiers that died during this conflict.

We also visited a site where one of our students relative is at rest. Here we were able to reflect on this. Also at this site we laid out 54 crosses that the students had made with the names of all those soldiers who have given their lives from WWI to present day, that are related to staff and students at our school. We were also able to walk in some of the trenches that have been preserved and this gave us a small insight into the horrible conditions that these soldiers had to live in and also how narrow no-ones land is and therefore how the constant fear of being shot by the other side must have always been there.

I know that I and the students have taken a lot away from this trip to reflect on. I would like to thank Mr Dooley, Mr Shearman and Ms Askew for assisting me in running the trip.
