Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular pathway for young people who wish to gain valuable work experience, earn a salary and achieve recognised qualifications while developing the skills needed for a successful career.

An apprenticeship combines paid employment with structured training, allowing individuals to learn directly from experienced professionals in the workplace while studying towards industry-recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of sectors, including engineering, healthcare, business, finance, construction, digital technology, education, law, creative industries and many more.

There are several levels of apprenticeship available, offering opportunities for students at different stages of their educational journey:

Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2)

Equivalent to GCSE level, these apprenticeships provide an excellent entry point into the workplace and are suitable for students looking to develop practical skills and gain experience in a chosen sector.

Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3)

Equivalent to A Levels, Advanced Apprenticeships allow apprentices to gain higher-level skills and knowledge while continuing to earn and learn.

Higher Apprenticeships (Levels 4 and 5)

Equivalent to a Foundation Degree, Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND), these apprenticeships provide advanced technical and professional training in a range of industries.

Degree Apprenticeships (Levels 6 and 7)

Degree Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to achieve a Bachelor's or Master's Degree while working for an employer. Apprentices earn a salary, gain extensive work experience and have their tuition fees paid by their employer and the government.

Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships offer many benefits, including:

  • Earning a salary while you learn
  • Gaining real-world work experience
  • Achieving recognised qualifications
  • Developing professional skills and networks
  • Avoiding university tuition fees
  • Improving future employment prospects
  • Progressing to higher-level qualifications and careers

Is an Apprenticeship Right for You?

Apprenticeships are suitable for students who enjoy practical learning, want to develop workplace skills and are motivated to combine study with employment. They provide an excellent alternative to full-time college or university study and can lead to rewarding careers across a wide range of industries.

At St Thomas More High School, we are committed to ensuring that all students are aware of the full range of opportunities available to them. Through careers education, employer encounters, apprenticeship events and individual guidance, we support students in exploring whether an apprenticeship could be the right pathway for their future.

Earn, learn and build your future through an apprenticeship pathway that matches your interests, skills and ambitions.

  • Improve employability through real workplace skills
  • Progress into higher-level roles or further study
  • Build confidence in a structured, supported environment

Apprenticeship Application Top Tips

Applying for an apprenticeship is competitive, but with the right preparation, young people can significantly improve their chances of success. These tips can help students stand out and make strong applications.

1. Start early and apply widely

Apprenticeships are advertised all year round, and popular ones fill quickly.

  • Check vacancies regularly (weekly at least)
  • Apply to more than one opportunity
  • Don’t wait until the last minute

🔗 Find vacancies: https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

2. Tailor each application

Employers want to see genuine interest in their role.

  • Avoid copying and pasting the same answers
  • Link skills and experience to the job description
  • Show you understand the company and role

Even small details (like mentioning the employer’s values) can make a big difference.

3. Write a strong personal statement

This is often the most important part of the application.

Include:

  • Why you want the apprenticeship?
  • What interests you about the sector
  • Skills you have developed (school, hobbies, work experience)
  • Examples of teamwork, problem-solving or leadership

Tip: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure examples clearly.

4. Show your skills—not just qualifications

Employers are interested in attitude and potential.

Highlight:

  • Communication skills
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Willingness to learn
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Teamwork

5. Check spelling and grammar carefully

A simple mistake can make a poor impression.

  • Proofread your application before submitting.
  • Ask a teacher, parent or carer to check it.
  • Read it out loud to spot errors.

6. Prepare for interviews

If shortlisted, candidates will usually be invited to an interview or assessment.

Prepare by:

  • Researching the employer
  • Practising common questions
  • Preparing examples of your skills
  • Dressing appropriately and arriving early

🎥 Helpful interview advice:

7. Build a positive online presence

Some employers may check social media.

  • Ensure profiles are appropriate and professional
  • Highlight achievements where possible
  • Consider LinkedIn for older students

8. Gain experience where possible

Work experience, volunteering or part-time jobs all help applications stand out.

They show:

  • Commitment
  • Responsibility
  • Real-world skills

9. Be persistent and resilient

Apprenticeships can be competitive.

  • Rejections are normal—learn from feedback
  • Keep improving your application
  • Apply again if suitable roles come up
  • TOP TIP:  Keep a spreadsheet of all the applications you have made, along with closing dates so you can keep track!!!

10. Ask for support

Students do not need to do this alone.

  • Careers' teachers can review applications
  • Parents and carers can help proofread
  • Careers advisers can offer guidance and mock interviews.

Final tip

A strong apprenticeship application is not just about grades—it’s about showing motivation, attitude, and potential to learn and grow in a workplace.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Young people can start an apprenticeship if they:

  • Are aged 19 or over

Apprenticeships are available whether a young person is leaving school, changing direction, or continuing education in a more practical way.

Levels of Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are equivalent to different academic levels:

  • Level 2 – GCSE equivalent
  • Level 3 – A Level equivalent
  • Levels 4–5 – Higher Apprenticeships (Foundation degree level)
  • Levels 6–7 – Degree Apprenticeships (Bachelor’s or Master’s level)

Apprenticeships offer a strong alternative to traditional college or university routes:

  • Earn while learning (no tuition fees or student debt)

University Information

University Information

For many students, university is an exciting next step after Sixth Form, offering the opportunity to study a subject they are passionate about, gain valuable skills, meet new people and prepare for future careers.

There are over 160 universities and higher education providers across the UK, offering thousands of courses ranging from Medicine, Engineering and Law to Creative Arts, Business and Sport. Choosing the right university is about much more than rankings – students should consider course content, location, accommodation, facilities, graduate employment rates, placement opportunities and student life.

What is the Russell Group?

The Russell Group is an association of 24 research-intensive universities in the UK, including institutions such as the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Warwick. Russell Group universities are known for their strong research, academic reputation and links with employers.

The group of prestigious universities belong to the Russel Group.

However, it is important to remember that a Russell Group university is not automatically the best choice for every student. Many excellent universities outside the Russell Group offer outstanding teaching, specialist courses, industry placements and graduate outcomes. The most important factor is finding the university and course that best suits your ambitions, interests and learning style.

Useful University Resources

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) is the central application system for UK universities. Students can search for courses, attend virtual events, compare universities and submit applications through UCAS.

Work Experience

At our school, we are committed to helping students develop the skills, confidence and experiences they need to succeed in the world of work. Work experience and volunteering play a key role in our careers programme, allowing students to learn about different industries, build employability skills, and explore future career pathways.

We offer a structured range of opportunities from Year 9 through to Sixth Form, ensuring students can progressively build their experience over time.

Year 7 & 8 – Take Your Child to Work Day

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 are encouraged to take part in Take Your Child to Work Day, where possible. This provides an early opportunity to:

  • Experience the world of work first-hand
  • Learn about different job roles and workplaces
  • Talk to parents, carers, or family members about their careers
  • Begin thinking about future aspirations

Duty Pupil Work Experience (In-school opportunity)

We also offer pupils the chance to take part in one-day in-school work experience as a Duty Pupil. This gives students the opportunity to:

  • Take on responsibility within the school environment
  • Develop teamwork, communication and organisational skills
  • Experience elements of leadership and service
  • Understand how a workplace operates

Year 10 – Two Week Work Experience

In Year 10, all students are supported to complete a two-week work experience placement.

This is a key part of their careers education and allows students to:

  • Gain real experience in a chosen workplace
  • Develop confidence and independence
  • Understand employer expectations
  • Explore potential career pathways in more depth
  • Strengthen future college, sixth form and apprenticeship applications

We actively encourage students to secure placements in areas that interest them, with support from the Careers Team where needed.

Year 12 – One Week Work Experience

In Sixth Form, students complete a one-week work experience placement to further develop their employability skills and prepare for post-18 pathways.

This experience helps students to:

  • Gain insight into professional environments
  • Strengthen university, apprenticeship and job applications
  • Build industry contacts and references
  • Confirm or refine career ambitions

Volunteering & Wider Opportunities

We strongly encourage students to take part in volunteering and enrichment activities, including:

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Students can gain valuable experience through volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, helping them develop resilience, leadership and community spirit.

Core RE Programme (Year 12)

As part of our Sixth Form Core Religious Education programme, students also engage in volunteering activities that support:

  • Community engagement
  • Reflection on service and responsibility
  • Personal development and teamwork

Why Work Experience Matters

These opportunities help students to:

  • Develop key employability skills
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Understand the world of work
