Spotlight - Essex Swimming Champion

James Bayley 10/A

This was my second time racing this event, I was placed as fourth to start with on paper, this meant that I was not in the same heat as the boys that I needed to beat. The time I needed to do was 20 seconds quicker than the time I had done before which was only a few weeks ago, this time was to only make sure that I would get a third place...

In the race I was swimming it on my own as I had already lapped the other boys just after 500 metres, the time I did was 17:40.99 this was 30 seconds quicker than the time I had done before. When I had finished my race I went to the warm down pool and had started to swim when my coach stopped me and told me to watch the last heat of the boys 1500 which had the boys I needed to beat in, he said to me that if they were on the length that he thought they were on by looking at their times that I would be the county champion as it would be near impossible for them to get the time that they needed to beat mine. I had come first in the age group with 14 seconds between me and second place.
