St Thomas More High School

National Cross Country Finals

The STM Junior Cross County squad competed in the National Final of the English Schools Cross Country event at the weekend. The final took place at the Range High School, Formby, Merseyside:

James Casey, Tom Cozens, Jayden Gwaza, Mick Jones, Luke Randall, Jude Walton.

To put their outstanding achievement into context, the local rounds of this competition started back in October, with over 1660 teams from over 570 schools throughout England competing against other local schools in their County. The leading teams from the competitions held in each County then compete in one of 8 Regional finals in the first weeks of November. The National Final pits the leading 3 teams in each age group in each Region against each other.

The team travelled down the day before the event and before their overnight stay went for a team meal in Liverpool City Centre, a great experience and fun evening for the squad prior to the big day.

After an early start to the day, they made their way over to the race course for the competition. The facilities set up and standard of competition was second to none and it was a nervy but exciting time for the boys prior to the grand final! A proud moment came when the competition announcer welcomed “St Thomas More High School, Westcliff representing the school for the first time at the National Finals”. The boys ran excellently in the event, working well together and finished 18th in England!

We are extremely proud of their achievements and hope it is the start of more National Successes in this area.

A special thank you to Mr Griffin for all his support, driving and help with the team. Mr Perrotton, Head of PE.
