St Thomas More High School

Year 7 Football Versus St. Martins, Brentwood, in the Essex Cup

St. Thomas More’s year 7s came out on top in dramatic fashion to progress to the last 16 of the Essex Cup. With the score tied at 0-0 and just two minutes remaining, St. Martins seized on some sloppy defending to pounce in the box, with what seemed to be, a very late winner, in this good old fashioned cup tie. However, young Tommy Salter had other ideas. With twenty seconds remaining, he beat three men on the edge of the box before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the bottom left hand corner of the net, which led to wild jubilant scenes. This strike galvanised the Tommy More lads and sank St. Martin hearts. Extra time couldn’t separate these two spirited and courageous teams and penalties were needed to decide the outcome.

Tommy Salter stepped up first to slot home an ice cool penalty, Oliver Robinson then produced a fantastic finger-tipped save on to the crossbar and Tommy More were in control. Man of the Match Finley Gregory resoundingly despatched his penalty before another great save from Robinson with his legs put us in firm control. Ted Turnham drilled his spot-kick home, which left the destiny of the next round at the feet of the ever consistent Ben Cornish. Ben strolled up and calmly slotted the crucial kick away with ease.

A great win for Tommy More in some very difficult conditions. The boys showed great fight, heart, determination and Tommy More spirit.

There were some outstanding individual performances from Finley Gregory, Oliver Robinson and Joshua Cronin. We look forward to the last 16 of the Essex Cup in the coming weeks.
