St Thomas More High School

Student Council Leadership Day

On Tuesday 7th October all form representatives of student council gathered together to take part in a leadership development day. The question posed to us at the start of the day was ‘Can we move a mountain?’

The answer has to be no but if we start moving one rock at a time and with the help of others it is possible. We used this theme to make us think about how we might go about carrying out social action in our community.

The aims of the day were to help us develop an understanding of the effect of self-limiting beliefs and how to break through them (quite literally as some people tried to break wooden boards with their bare hands!). We also looked at developing habits that will maximise our own personal effectiveness in communication and leadership. The purpose of the day was to help us prepare for a series of House assemblies that will be held throughout the next few days as we launch a school wide initiative called Global Noticeboard.

The culmination of this event will take place over October half term when we have set ourselves the goal of raising money in support of Caritas Anchor House, the Diocesan social action charity that supports homeless people. St Thomas More are the only secondary school in the Diocese and the country to take on this initiative which if it works well, will become a model for all schools. The Bishops Synod is watching carefully how we get on as, I am told, are the Vatican. Please keep us in your prayers.

There will be much more to come on this so look out for letters on their way home to you as well as e-mailshots in the run up to half term week asking for your support.
