Spotlight - Marathon de Sables

Joseph O'Brien

Congratulations to former student Joseph who completed the 'Marathon de Sables' (5th - 10th April), billed as 'the toughest footrace on Earth' which takes place annually in the temperatures, sand-dunes and rocky escarpments of the  Moroccan Sahara Desert! Read more below!

It is a six-day ultra-marathon, equivalent to five and a half regular marathons,156 miles, with the longest single stretch being 57 miles (91km); participants are required to be completely self-sufficient and run with food and everything they will need for the six days, apart from water. There were approximately 1,300 starters and Joe managed to finish inside the top third of the field! Not only running of  for the challenges of the event but, importantly, also to raise money for the 'Street Child' charity which works with the orphans and street children of Sierra Leone.

Well done Joseph on an incredible and demanding challenge!
