U14 Cricket County Final v Westcliff – Won by 44 runs

Many believe that football is “a funny old game”, although after witnessing the events of this final you are safe to use the same term with cricket.

 Selecting to bat first as Captain Cullen ‘had a feeling’ it would be best, we were quickly reduced to 26 for 3 with Dyos, Thomas and O’Riordan-Mitchell going cheaply. Roy looked set for a good score before he too fell to the leg spinner to leave our chances of posting a competitive total slim. McCarthy and Cullen batted sensibly, keeping the scoreboard ticking over with ones and twos, before both fell, the latter top scoring with 20 from 30 balls. The lower order only added a few more runs before we were all out for just 84.

The talk between innings was about keeping it tight, restricting the runs and trying to nick some early wickets. If we could get a few of their top order then we had a chance. Nobody could foresee what was to happen in the very first over as Cullen first had their captain caught at mid-off before clean bowling the next two batsmen. A hat-trick and triple wicket maiden. Unbelievable. Westcliff were in disarray and it got even worse for them as first Curtis took two wickets in an over before Roy came on to take a wicket with his first ball. Cullen returned to pick up another with Waller taking a smart catch before he himself took a wicket in his solitary over. It was soon all over as Roy took two more to leave Westcliff 40 all out. An exhilarating final that will go down in Tommy More history.
