St Thomas More High School

Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold Practice

Over the Easter holidays, a group of 13 students set off to the Peak District on our first ever Gold D of E practice. We headed over Kinder Scout to wonderful views of the surrounding area as we walked along the ridge. Over the four days we had every type of weather, however, through grit, determination and a love for walking; we all pushed though and had a lovely time.

For the Gold D of E, the students have to spend four days walking and three days camping. They have to spend a minimum of 8 hours out in the area that they are walking. I was very impressed with their ability to navigate and work in a team. This year we had students who had trained at different school for the bronze and silver but are now in our sixth form, join us. This meant that the group had to adapt to different walking paces and personalities which they did excellently and really supported each other when needed.

I am now really looking forward to them completing their Gold assessment week in July when they are heading off to Snowdonia to complete their walk.
