First XI Essex Cup Cricket v Barking Abbey

The first XI cricket team secured their first win to progress to the quarter finals of the Essex Cup. The team, comprised of players from Years 10 through to Year 14, batted first and put on a more than respectable total of 130 from their 20 overs. McCarthy (19) and Coelho (55) laid the foundations with some positive batting and good running. Captain Robinson came in and hit 38 off 27 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking over. After he fell and Ginzler came and went for a “Golden duck”, runs dried up although Dyos hit 5 from 5 to ensure we posted a competitive total.

Our bowling and fielding was tight from the outset, with Brown and Thomas getting important early wickets. The Barking Abbey captain was smashing the ball to all corners and supported by the number 4, suddenly runs were coming easy. Heavy rain caused a break in play for 15 minutes that did little to ease the tension. When Waller clean bowled the number 4 batsman on our return to the field, it put pressure on their captain to keep the strike and score runs at the same time. Clever field placements from Robinson ensured the boundaries dried up and in desperation, he looked for an extra run that was never there as Coelho and Gard combined to run him out for 66. The rest was a formality as three wickets fell in quick succession to see the STM boys home to a 10 run victory.
