St Thomas More High School

Bully Beat Workshop

On Wednesday this week, Form 7S were lucky enough to be involved in a ‘Bully Beat’ workshop. They were selected to be the form to be involved in the process as they had the highest amount of praises on their respect cards in the previous term.

The workshop is funded by the Healthy Schools team. The work of the Nathan Timothy Foundation - 'The Songwriting Charity' addresses the emotional health and wellbeing of children and teenagers  using songwriting and music technology.  The objective of the day is for the Year 7 students to create their own anti-bullying anthem. The lyrical content was generated exclusively by them. It was a great team building exercise, and created awareness and discussion on anti-bullying. During the course of the day, the pupils wrote lyrics, composed melodies, making choices about musical sounds, singing, rapping, and designing CD covers.

The boys worked individually, with partners and as a whole class to create a track that is unique to them and our school. The end result is fantastic, with some real stars from 7S singing and rapping – you can listen to it by going to https://soundcloud.com/the-songwriting-charity/never-ending-stories-st-thomas-more-catholic-secondarysongwritingcharity.org

Many thanks to Nathan Timothy, who runs the charity, and his colleague Noel for the time spent with us, and the inspiration. The students absolutely loved the experience.
